Ways to use clue grammar, crossings and patterns to make progress on a crossword.
Read the clue literally first
Before looking for tricks, identify the likely part of speech and tense. A plural clue usually expects a plural answer; a past-tense clue often expects past tense.
Use crossings as evidence
A crossing letter is more valuable than a vague hunch. Fill the clues you know with confidence, then return to uncertain entries with a stronger pattern.
Notice clue conventions
Abbreviations, question marks and quoted phrases often signal special treatment. The exact conventions vary by publication, so learn the style of the puzzle you are solving.
Write the pattern you actually know
Represent unknown letters consistently, for example C??SS. A pattern search is much more useful than entering speculative letters as though they were confirmed.
Check the whole grid
If a candidate forces several awkward crossing answers, it is probably wrong. Crosswords are interconnected: one attractive answer should not be allowed to damage the surrounding entries.
Use a solver as a last-mile tool
A solver is best for generating candidates from a known pattern. The clue still determines which candidate makes sense.
