How Our Word Tools Work

This page explains how LetterToolkit creates search results and how we review the site's word data and supporting content.

Unscrambling letters

The tool compares the letters entered by a user with entries in the site's English word index. A result is returned only when its letters can be formed from the available letters, including any wildcard characters supplied by the user.

Filters

Starts With, Ends With, Contains and Word Length filters are applied to the candidate results. Sorting can then prioritize longer words, alphabetical order or standard letter-tile point values.

Word-list source

The search index is based on an open-source Wordnik word list. We normalize entries for this tool by focusing on simple alphabetic words in supported lengths. The source license is retained with the project.

What the results do not mean

A result appearing on LetterToolkit does not guarantee acceptance in a specific branded word game or tournament. Different games use different approved dictionaries and rule sets.

Corrections

We welcome reports about questionable entries or missing words. Corrections can be sent through the Contact page and may be reviewed before being incorporated into the site's word data.

Editorial principle

Supporting pages are written to explain the tool, word patterns and common search tasks. We aim to avoid pages that exist only to repeat keywords without useful information.
